“Every single person in this world is precious.” - 54th The Veritable Records of King Sejong (1431)

In 15th century Korea, all humans with a disability were considered valuable members of society and were actively supported in their social advancement and role. Seen from this perspective, the past gave us great teachings to keep in mind. The Special Olympics which will commence in Berlin in June contribute to the echo of these teachings so that they will be heard throughout the world.

The Special Olympics are an international sports event that involves athletes with mental disabilities. More than 190 delegations from all over the world as well as 7.000 athletes will visit the event in Berlin this year. The focus is not set on “competition”, “winning” or “ranking”. Instead, with the motto #UnbeatableTogether #ZusammenUnschlagbar, the event will demonstrate the solidarity of the athletes to the people and show that achievement is possible for everyone.

The Korean Culture Center will host a “K-Pop Party with Special Olympics” event to highlight the value and significance of the Special Olympics with its participation as well as to share the positive energy of “culture” with athletes and citizens from all over the world.

We invite everyone to welcome the athletes from Korea with performances and various programs.

1. K-Pop Stage

1) K-Pop DJing with DJ Roo

"K-Pop fascinates the whole world and with K-Pop, we start in the Special Olympic Party!"

Countless Korean singers and groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, Stray Kids, NCT and New Jeans conquered the hearts of pop fans with their intense music and overwhelming performances. At the same time, K-Pop established itself as a representative cultural aspect of Korea, which is why it will of course also be present at our party. Focus is on the artist DJ Roo (JIN Entertainment) who already proved his charms as DJ throughout all of Germany.

2) K-Pop Dance Performance: NotYou Crew by C-Hope Berlin

The team of the Berlin dance crew NotYou Crew of C-Hope Berlin stands out for their perfect dance covers and individuality. They are a group of talented fans who won the 2021 K-Pop DIY Award as well as the 2019 World Festival Berlin Regional Qualifying Award. Their performance will open the K-Pop DJ Party.

2. Korea Stage

1) Holo Arirang – Haegeum Performance (Dowon Kim, Athlete Leader of Special Olympics Korea)

Arirang is a symbol of traditional Korean folk songs and closely connected to the history of the Korean peninsula. Different versions of this song can be found throughout the world, including all regions of the Korean peninsula. In the 1990 released song “Holo Arirang” (composed by Handol), modern rhythms were added to describe Korea as a beautiful painting. 

Dowon Kim – the Athlete Leader of Special Olympics Korea – plays this “Holo Arirang” with Haegeum – a traditional string instrument from Korea - to deliver a message of peace.

2) Samulnori

Samulnori means “to play with four instruments”. The four instruments in this case are Kwaengkwari, Janggu, Buk and Jing – traditional Korean musical instruments. Each of them has its own sound characteristics. Played individually, it is difficult to imagine how they will work together in an ensemble but when the samulnori begins, they stun the listeners with their harmony and intensity. In this sense, the connectivity between the instruments in samulnori is comparable to the motto of the Special Olympics #UnbeatableTogether #ZusammenUnschalgbar.

3) Gayageum Performance (Kim Doo-young, lecturer of the Korean Culture Center)

Gayageum is a representative traditional instrument in Korea. The party will be opened with its unique and lyrical sound.

3. Nori-Madang (놀이마당)

“Nori”(놀이) means “playing” and “Madang”(마당) means “place or situation where something is done” in Korean. In the “Nori-Madang zone”, you can enjoy a multitude of games, Korean food, traditional Korean garments and a photo-zone.

1) Game Zone

Here are Korean games. Enjoy funny but easy Korean traditional games such as tuho, jegi-chagi etc. 

2) Hansik Zone

Hansik - Korean food is considered as very healthy. The mix of vegetables and meat as well as the various fermentation systems ensure a very balanced diet. On our party, you can taste the prepared fingerfood and beverages.

3) Hanbok & Photo Zone

The „Hanbok” is a traditional Korean robe which has been undergoing changes for a thousand years. Based on the hanbok from the Joseon era, a new generation of hanboks with modern designs is now establishing itself in the world. Try out wearing a hanbok yourself and get a picture at our photobooth for a memory.
