5. International Younghi Pagh-Paan Composition Prize 2020
"Announcement of changes"
The International Younghi Pagh-Paan Composition Prize which is taking place for the 5th time this year was launched in 2016 by the Korean Cultural Center (Cultural Department of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea) and was met with great interest by the international music scene. This year, the competition ceremony and the accompanying concert were originally to be presented as part of the renowned Essen festival for contemporary music “NOW!” on 30 October at the Essen Philharmonic.
Due to the current corona pandemic and the associated regulations of the state government (of North Rhine-Westphalia) for the organization of events, the joint organizer Philharmonie Essen has announced that the scale of this year’s festival has to be significantly reduced (cancellation of orchestral performance, cancellation of performances by musicians from abroad). Furthermore, representatives of the Philharmonie Essen expressed hope that the awards ceremony and the winner’s concert of the International Younghi Pagh-Paan Composition Prize can be presented at the Essen Philharmonic in 2022.
Taking into account the fact that it is at present very difficult to travel to Germany for the award winners and for the Korean performers who should participate at the awards ceremony and the concert with the award winning works, the Korean Cultural Center has decided to carry out this year’s event online. In 2020, Prof. Younghi Pagh-Paan was awarded with the distinguished Großer Kunstpreis Berlin.
On the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the International Younghi Pagh-Paan Composition Prize, the 1st prize-winning works of this year’s competition and of past competitions are to be released on CD (in the years in which there was no 1st prize, the works which received the 2nd prize will be recorded).
We hope that the musicians can give people pleasure in this worldwide crisis of an unprecedented scale and are looking forward to the applications for the 5th International Younghi Pagh-Paan Composition Prize of as many composers as possible!
